RMR-046: Great Weekend to get up on The Mountain

Great Weekend to hike on Roan Mountain

Fall colors and fresh, mountain grown apples.

Roan Mountain State Park hiking trails

This will be a great weekend to get up on The Mountain. Temperatures are forecasts to be moderate. Plan for a little colder on top on the mountain.

There is still plenty of color on the slopes and in the Roan Mountain State Park.

Fall is a great time to go for a hike. The Roan Mountain State Park has some really great hiking trails. There are lengths from a fourth of a mile to over five miles. Check in at the visitors center for a trail map and pick out the ones that are best suited for you.

Be adventurous. Choose a new trail!

While you are on the Roan, get some fresh trail snacks at Jarrett’s Orchard. Conveniently located between the Park and the top of the mountain. Near downtown Burbank.

Jarrett’sJarretts-Orchard-sign Orchard is almost a Century Farm in Roan Mountain. The Jarrett’s have been growing apples for almost one hundred years. Harold and Beth Ann Jarrett are continuing the tradition.

The Jarretts grow several varieties of popular apples and some local favorites. Look for Winter Banana apple, and Roman Beauty apple.

If you are unsure about which apple is best for cooking or eating or keeping, just ask. Every one is very willing to help answer your apple questions.

In addition to apples, they have an old-timey roaster pumpkin that has bee gron on the Roan for over three generations.

One of the best bargains is a bag of mountain cabbage called Ex-Pack. You will have enough to share with friends and keep all winter. Unless you make your own sauer kraut. The the big bag doesn’t look so big after all.

The orchard is located off of Burbank Road on Jess Jarrett Road.

Take Highway 143. through the Roan Mountain State Park to the Burbank Community.

Watch for Jack’s Store on the left. Turn left immediately past Jack’s on to Burbank Road.

About a half mile turn right on Jess Jarrett Road. The apple shed will be on the right, the orchard will be on your right. Open Monday through Saturday 8:30 till 5:30. Closed Sunday.
