RMR-088: Where Are They Hiding? A Survey of Rare Appalachian Salamanders with Tyler Wicks

Tyler Wicks is an East Tennessee State University student majoring in Biology. He will present some findings of his study on Rare Appalachian Salamanders at the Winter Naturalists Rally, February 9, 2019.

The Southern Appalachian Mountains are the epicenter of salamander diversity globally and are home to many rare endemic species.

Surveying these endemic species is important for assessing their population status.

Tyler’s recent survey, which was funded in part by a 2018 grant from Friends of Roan Mountain, focused primarily on the Northern gray-cheeked salamander (Plethodon montanus), an Appalachian endemic.
